to learn music and dancing,

and thought it was time well spent.

~ Fritz Gilbert, the Retirement Manifesto

My mantra for the next year...

I choose to be content.

I realize that contentment is a choice.

I am consciously choosing contentment in each moment.

Simple, but profound. And I struggle with this every day

 Daily happiness > Future Happiness

Pretty good crystal ball...

The North can make a steam-engine, locomotive or railway car; hardly a yard of cloth or a pair of shoes can you make.

You are rushing into war with one of the most powerful, ingeniously mechanical and determined people on earth—right at your doors. You are bound to fail. Only in your spirit and determination are you prepared for war. In all else you are totally unprepared…

At first you will make headway, but as your limited resources begin to fail, and shut out from the markets of Europe by blockade as you will be, your cause will begin to wane.
~ General William Tecumseh Sherman, 1860

But look what it got her...

Only do what your heart tells you.

What he said...

To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you like everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight and never stop fighting.
~ e.e. cummings

Now, where's my spoon?

Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."

Said the old man, "I do that too."

The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."

I do that too," laughed the little old man.

Said the little boy, "I often cry."

The old man nodded, "So do I."

But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."

And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.

I know what you mean," said the little old man.

~ Shel Silverstein

Learn from the mistakes of others.

You can't live long enough to make them all yourself.

Too short indeed...

Life is too short to wake up in the morning with regrets.

So, love the people who treat you right, forgive the ones that don't, and believe that everything happens for a reason.

If you get the chance, take it. If if changes you, let it.

Nobody said it would be easy - they just promised it would be worth it.
~ Dr. Suess

After you've done a thing the same way for two years, look it over carefully.  After five years, look at it with suspicion.

And after ten years, throw it away and start all over.

Gratitude is a path walked daily, and is especially endearing when in service to others.

Good advice!

First, know when to engage. Arguments easy to start and hard to end. For a dispute to go well, it should be real, important and specific. You need to have a point to make, not just an emotional conflict or complaint to air. If someone has hurt you, figure out why; that becomes a real basis for argument.

Next, pause to consider how important that point is and whether it’s worth arguing over.

Finally, stick to the specific dispute at hand so that the argument doesn’t expand or spiral. If the disagreement really is over the dishwasher (and look, there’s often cause), don’t let it become a referendum on your marriage.

~ an article in the New York Times (How to Argue Well), paraphrasing Bo Seo's book Good Arguments: How Debate Teaches Us to Listen and Be Heard

Well...yeah.

Memory is like an orgasm.

It's a lot better if you don't have to fake it.

~ Seymour Cray

I've never met an envious billionaire, either...

The world is not driven by green, it's driven by envy.

And so the fact that everybody's five times better off then they used to be, the take it for granted.

All they think about is somebody else having more now and it's not fair that he should have it and they don't.

That's the reason God came down and told Moses that he couldn't envy his neighbor's wife or even his donkey.  Even the old Jews were having trouble with envy!

It's built into the nature of things.

It's weird for somebody my age, because I was in the middle of the Great Depression, and the hardship was unbelievable.  I was safer walking around in Omaha in the evening (back then) than I currently am in Los Angeles after all this great wealth and so forth.

So I have no way of doing anything about it.  I can't change the fact that a lot of people are very unhappy and feel very abused after everything has improved about 600 percent, because there's still somebody who has more.

I've conquered envy in my own life.  I don't envy anybody.  I don't give a damn what somebody else has.

But other people are going crazy about it

~ Charlie Munger, billionaire, and Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway

Madness, indeed...

Princess Ceinwyn: "Do you understand that madness? (meaning love)"

Derfel:

and suddenly know that life will be impossible without them,

and know that their voice can make your heart miss a beat,

and that their company is all your heart can ever desire,

and that their absence will leave your soul alone, bereft, and lost."

Princess Ceinwyn:  "Has that every happened to you, Lord Derfel?"

"It has never happened until this moment, my Lady."

The more things change...

The dogmas of the quiet past are inadequate to the stormy present.

The occasion is piled high with difficulties and we must  rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew.

We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.

Where do dreams go to die?

Comfort is a drug.

Once you get used to it, it becomes addicting.  Give a weak person consistent stimulation, good food, cheap entertainment and they'll throw their ambitions right out the window.

Why I read history

For the great enemy of truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth – persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

Too often we hold to the clichés of our forebears….We enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.

~ President John Kennedy
